Microsoft just baffles me...

Today, Microsoft finally released it's Office suite for iOS, mainly the iPad. Everything is there from Word, Excel to PowerPoint.

The offer does look good... Until you realize that you have to subscribe for 99$/year for the Office Home version.

That's right... You buy... Errr ... Rent Office for 99$/year...

Apple's office products (Pages, Numbers and Keynote) cost a big total of 30$/Life!

For the "Home" user, it's just plain crazy. Let's do some math:
- I'm 43, meaning I should have at least another 40 years in front of me
- I paid 20$ for Pages and Numbers. Add Keynote and I would have spent a total of 30$

Apple: 30$ for 40 years = 30$
Microsoft: 99$ x 40 years = 3960$

Go figure!

Advertise your Minecraft server for free!

You are hosting a Minecraft Server on your network and you don't know how to advertise it.

I've setup a new website at http://mcpe.crombz.com where your can publish your server for free.  It is easy to use and does not require any kind of membership.

1- Visit http://mcpe.crombz.com with your browser from the network hosting your server
2- Enter a short description of your game
3- Enter the shared external port you have configure on your router
4- Set your status (Online/Offline)
5- Update!

That's it.  The website will detect your external IP for you.  Online servers will be listed up to 5 hours which should be enough to gather new players.

The website supports mobile devices like the iPod or the iPad so you can easily host a MInecraft Pocket Edition game, using only your mobile device (assuming that your router is sharing the device game over the internet)

Enjoy!

Making cash online... Does it work?

I got curious about websites claiming that you can make money online by answering surveys once in a while.

Read my comments at the bottom for the daily follow up on this experiment...

A little extra doesn't hurt but you have to be careful about providing your personal information.  After doing some investigations about what website had the best rating, I've decided to make my choice on PaidViewPoint.  I've just registered with them to see how it actually does work and if it is actually providing some source of income for a reasonable amount of time.

I'm not assuming that I will get rich overnight and probably, it will be a short ride.  But I will try it out and provide you with my comments in the next few days about my experience.

If you want to register with them, use my referral link as they promise a 25$ for each friend subscribing to them using my referral http://paidviewpoint.com/?r=patballeux

Have you already tried it out?  Leave a comment about your own experience...

Let's see where it goes and hopefully, enjoy the ride.

Your PC has VIRUSES!!!

You're browsing the net, wandering from one website to another and then you see a popup saying that your PC is infected with viruses...  OMG!  You're screwed!

No you're not.  Read my lips... my post, YOU ARE NOT INFECTED!  But if you click the link proposed in the screen, you might get infected...  I'm dead serious!

As most of my readers are technology aware, it may seem obvious.  This post is intended for moms, dads, aunts, grandpas and about 90% of the world population.  Here's the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth...

Technically, a webpage cannot detect if you have a virus on your computer.  Be it Windows, OSX or you Android device...  It's totally impossible as no browser (the thing you used to go on the Internet) is not allowed to scan your computer in anyway.  Makers of Internet Explorer, Firefox or Chrome have not provided any kind of special access to read your folders, your memory or your Facebook accounts.

The only way a browser could do more than it was intended to do is if you have installed a plugin from an unknown source, that promises some technological miracles... You know, "Download Faster" or "Plugin Required to view the video...".  The only plugins you need to browse the net are Flash and Java and that's about it.  Nothing else is required in any way.

So when a windows popups up, saying that some virus or trojan has been detected, close everything!  That's right!  Simply close everything to avoid getting infected.

A few simple rules:

  • A webpage cannot scan your hard drive
  • A webpage cannot detect your computer's performances
  • Facebook will not shutdown your account if you do not share
  • Twitter will not ban your account if you do now retweet
  • The FBI does not have any report about the content of your hard drive
  • The free cruise is a scam
  • Your bank will never ask for your password to validate your identity
  • Reset your password only from the official page (Facebook, your bank, etc...)
  • Never trust a link in your emails

Why would you trust a webpage ad anything more than a stranger knocking at your door?

Share this post around with your friends, your family and make sure they understand that the real danger is them, clicking blindly.

Have a good day!
